Old Sacramento Drawbridge Gold Bridge

A New and Improved Old Sac

March 21, 2017

The weather is getting warmer and Spring Break is right around the corner; which means it’s time to get out and take advantage of good grub and a relaxing break.   Typically, Old Sac is a primary choice in spending one’s lounge time, but we Sacramentans seem to have a love-hate relationship with this historic jewel.

With great restaurants, old west saloons, and eclectic shops like Evangeline’s, Old Sacramento should be bustling with crowds.  Yet for some reason, this riverfront only draws in out-of-towners and school kids.  Mayor Darrell Steinberg, however, has peaked interest in rebranding Old Sac by changing the name and even adding a waterfall off the infamous Tower Bridge.

While the city is headed in the right direction by wanting to improve the area, other Sacramento locals agree that the problem lies within the infrastructure.  Parking in Old Sac is already a chore, and with the arrival of the Golden 1 Center, game nights make it nearly impossible.  Combined with road closures and meters that charge until 10pm, Old Sacramento is passed up for the much more viable Downtown scene.

The City Council will be further discussing the plans for the revamp of Old Sac in April.  Until then, what do you think of the change? Do you think that the key to saving our historic old town is a waterfall or something else?
