MGMT Detail Upcoming Album, 'Little Dark Age'

December 21, 2017

MGMT’s forthcoming album, Little Dark Age, will be the band’s first release since 2013’s self-titled album. Based on what we’ve heard from the already released title track and “When You Die,” this album’s going to get trippy. Literally.

In a recent interview with Q Magazine, the band revealed that a song off the upcoming album called “James” was inspired by an acid trip. After lead singer Andrew VanWyngarden spent hours—or what felt like it—screaming “about Pakistan,” the trip turned productive, and “James” was completed on the spot. And that’s how it’s done.

According to the interview, there will be several guest appearances on Little Dark Age, including Ariel Pink (who co-wrote “When You Die”) and Connan Mockasin. But don’t be fooled by the album’s title—VanWyngarden says this album’s actually pretty light and relaxed, reflecting his and fellow bandmate Ben Goldwasser’s love of European synthpop.

Little Dark Age was co-produced by Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift) and Dave Fridmann and is expected to drop in February.
