Did Chad Smith Just Reveal the End of Touring for the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Say it ain’t so! Chad Smith explains.

July 11, 2017

Chad Smith, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer and Will Ferrell lookalike, may have just alluded to the end of RHCP’s touring career.

In a recent interview with The Eddie Trunk Podcast, Smith discussed the difficulties of touring while having families and shifting priorities. Sharing a post-show memory, he described a time in which bassist Flea asked the rest of the band how long they thought they could continue touring, generally speaking.

From what Smith said, it sounds like RHCP are going to continue making records, but they may not have the longer tour runs they’ve always done. Pointing out that Metallica does shorter tours with fewer dates, it sounds like they may be headed more in that kind of direction, rather than a full year- to a year-and-a-half-long tour in the future.

Only time will tell, but above all, Smith emphasized how grateful RHCP are to fans for wanting to see them play live.

So the retirement topic has come up, but it’s not all that surprising coming from a band that’s been around since 1983. Still, three out of the four band members are in their mid-50s, yet they sell out arenas and put on high-energy performances.

The guys are currently on tour in support of their 2016 release, The Getaway.
